Vancouver Island is highly dependant on its tourism industry and with the rise of the Canadian dollar, tourist travel numbers to the region have decreased over the past couple years. Traditionally, most local tourism sites are reactive and target people only when they arrive; very few target tourists outside their city, region, province, or country. To add to the dilemma, mass advertising through television & print media is expensive, and few operators have the resources to actively promote outside their region. This becomes a major issue when trying to attract an international market. Statistically, most Asian & European travelers make plans several months in advance, but do so on their own, and only to places that are enthusiastically advertised.
